India’s Olympic dreams are alive and vibrant as 117 athletes, including five reserves, compete for glory at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
This marks one of the largest contingents India has ever sent to the Games, with participants vying for medals in 69 events across 16 different sports at the Paris 2024 Olympics, including archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, equestrian, golf, hockey, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and tennis.
From athletics to archery, and boxing to badminton, these athletes are determined to make history and bring home medals, continuing the momentum from Tokyo 2020, where India achieved its best-ever Olympic performance.
Neeraj Chopra, who made history by winning gold in men’s javelin throw at Tokyo 2020, is part of the 29-member Indian athletics team and will aim to add to India’s medal tally at Paris 2024.
Other returning Olympic medallists include badminton star PV Sindhu, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, boxer Lovlina Borgohain, and select players from the Indian men’s hockey team led by Harmanpreet Singh.
Athletes like Avinash Sable, Aman Sehrawat, and the hockey team are also eager to contribute to India’s medal count at Paris 2024.
Manu Bhaker secured India’s first medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, earning a bronze and becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic shooting medal. She made history again by becoming the first Indian to win two medals in a single Olympic edition after claiming a mixed team 10m air pistol bronze with Sarabjot Singh.
India has won 38 Olympic medals to date, beginning with Norman Pritchard’s dual silver at Paris 1900. KD Jadhav became the first individual athlete from independent India to win an Olympic medal with his wrestling bronze at Helsinki 1952, while weightlifter Karnam Malleswari was the first woman to achieve this at Sydney 2000.
Abhinav Bindra was the first Indian to win Olympic gold in an individual event at Beijing 2008, remaining the only one for over a decade until Neeraj Chopra’s javelin victory at Tokyo 2020.
Men’s hockey, with 12 medals including eight golds, is India’s biggest contributor to its Olympic medal tally, followed by wrestling with seven medals.
India achieved its best-ever haul of seven medals, including one gold, at Tokyo 2020 and aims to surpass that at Paris 2024.
So far, India has won six medals, a silver and five bronze, at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
